Girls Club trainers come from everywhere — moms, teachers, nurses, counselors, midwives, doulas and women without any teaching background at all. What they share is wanting to give girls something they didn’t get themselves.
Girls Club is independent of and not affiliated with any religious institutions or teachings. We welcome girls of all faith backgrounds and beliefs and are committed to making every girl feel included. In keeping with this commitment, our curriculum and teachers do not teach, promote, or reference religious beliefs, God, or faith of any kind during Girls Club sessions.
At this point in time, the Girls Club program does not have specific language or curriculum to supports girls who do not have female anatomy.
Girls Club Teacher Training Level 1 covers how to teach female and basic male anatomy and function, body safety and autonomy, changes during puberty, hygiene, and how to manage period care. Sex education is included in Girls Club Level 2 Teacher Training. Trainers must complete Level 1 training to enroll in Level 2 training.
In February, I posted a video of myself teaching girls how to make a pad out of toilet paper if they didn’t have one. The part that took the video viral wasn’t the teaching — it was the moment I said: “Yay, I got my period.” That attitude of celebration instead of dread.
It ended up at over 30 million views, and suddenly my inbox was full of women asking for more. They wanted videos, curriculum, classes. And a lot of them wanted to teach this themselves.
I thought about every shape this could take. I could record more videos. I could put together a homeschool curriculum. I could be the online teacher for everyone, everywhere. But I came back to the magic of Girls Club. What makes it so special is the small group. It’s a woman who lives ten minutes from your daughter, teaching and holding space for everything that it takes to support girls as they grow.
So, I took a big step and created a training for women to lead Girls Club classes in their area.
This is the part of the story we get to write together. We are creating a new and improved way for girls to grow up. We are building a foundation for future women to feel special, supported, educated, and empowered. This is the beginning of something beautiful and powerful!
